The Makalu Base Camp trek takes you to high-altitude terrain, snow-clad landscapes, and an ethnic Himalayan lifestyle on a solitary trek to Makalu Base Camp (5250 m), now designated as Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. Mt. Makalu (8463 m) is the world’s fifth tallest peak. The Makalu Base Camp trek is a fantastic adventure with breathtaking landscapes that will never tire you out.
This is a challenging, complex, and demanding trek suitable for experienced trekkers and nature lovers who want to stay in peaceful, pristine nature rather than chase the crowds. Because Makalu Base Camp is located at 5100m, the long journey through ever-increasing elevation is an efficient technique to gradually acclimate. The Makalu Base Camp walk begins in the mid-eastern district of Tumlingtar. This is a high-altitude journey through thick rhododendron forests, scenic Gurung villages, river valleys, and the Makalu Barun National Park.
At higher altitudes, there are breathtaking panoramas of the Himalayas, high-altitude lakes, and passes to cross to reach the barn, a rocky base camp.
We fly from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar in the east, and then we have got about a three-and-a-half hour rickety drive to the start of the trekking expedition. Makalu Base Camp Trek is hence considered quite a remote trek with absolutely 17 days of trekking, and it’s quite a hardcore trek. Some travelers and trekkers who have completed the Everest Base Camp trek believe that the Makalu Trek is the more difficult trek to complete because the terrain is more difficult and there are many stone steps and rocky paths, landslip areas, narrow paths, and snow-covered passes.

The Makalu-Barun National Park is home to 3,000 species of plants, 440 bird species, and 75 species of mammals, such as the snow leopard, red panda, musk deer, wild boar, wild yak, and Himalayan Thar. This is also fantastic photography country, with the prospect of spotting wildlife at lower elevations, green pastures and fields, villages, and forests, as well as snow-capped peaks, glaciers, and steep routes!
Itinerary
Outside the airport hall, our MMT Terminal Representative will be waiting to welcome you (after you have completed your passport, immigration, and visa requirements). Your name will appear on our Treks & Expeditions logo, which he will be displaying. You will then be taken to your hotel in a vehicle.Afternoons are unoccupied. Evening: Our management team will organize a welcome supper to introduce you to your guide, go through the itinerary, and make sure you have everything you need.
After breakfast, we will embark on a guided tour of the Kathmandu valley's cultural world heritage monuments, including the Hindu temple of Pashupatinath, the largest stupa in the world, Bouddhanath, and Swoyambhunath Stupa, commonly known as the Monkey Temple. After touring the neighborhood, head to the historic Patan Durbar Square and Kathmandu Durbar Square (Freak Street), which have temples, unusual ancient art and architecture, a museum, and Kumari (a living goddess). Evening pre-trip counseling and confirmation of the requirements for trekking equipment, medical supplies, and trek legality.
We travel to Tumlingtar in the morning calm to meet the rest of our trip team. Drive toward Khadbari from the flat, pleasant valley of Tumlintar along the ridge north of Shoba Khola. The road passes through more lovely terraced fields with a breathtaking vista of the lush valley before descending to our campground, Chichila. Enjoy the Mt. Maklau range with the sun setting. Spend the night in camp.
Tumlingtar is in the Sankhuwasabha District, on the sides of the Arun River to the west and the Sabha Khola to the east, and is known as the "Gateway to Makalu Barun" by some. This small community even has its own airport, and many visitors prefer to fly in to Kathmandu in 45 minutes rather than endure the arduous and lengthy journey by road.
Our next destination of the Day is Chichila, a pretty small village. this small village is known for it cardamom production. This region has also been greatly impacted by the booming cardamom industry, which has helped many of the locals become quite wealthy.
We leave after breakfast and travel to Num. The charming village and lush forest that point the way to the Num are where our adventure hike begins. The settlement of Num offers magnificent views of the mountain on both sides. The next day in Num.
We enter the Makalu Barun Conservation Area after crossing a wooden bridge over the Barun River. All necessary legal authorizations for the trek will be handled by our guide. To get to Navagaon, we travel through extensive juniper and rhododendron forests, passing through a few settlements. Spend the night in a Navagaon lodge.
The community is surrounded on the west by the Ipsuwa Khola and on the east by the Kasuwa Khola. We arrive at the lovely settlement of Tashi Gaon after traversing villages and paddy fields. We take in the magnificent Himalayan view. In the evening, Tashigaon
As we pass through charming cities and the desolate Barun River valley, we stroll alongside small streams. We trekked for 6-7 hours with Isuwa Khola on one side and Hingsa Khola on the other to reach Kauma. Overnight at a lodge in Kauma.
It approximately takes 5 to 6 hours of walk from Kauma to Numbuck. the entire trail offers the best views of combined forest and snow covered hills. there we will setup our camp and spend the night over there.
Numbuk is surrounded by natural beauty with the fresh air and lovely voice of birds in the morning. the early morning singing of the bird reminds you for your destination. quickly our team wrap up our equipments and tent and move to our next destination i.e. Sarsung.
With the Barun Glacier distant from it, the base camp is a desolate area. From here, we have a spectacular view of Everest and Lhotse, as well as the majestic south face of Makalu. Similar to that, we can tour the region's lakes and glaciers, take pictures, and enjoy the time that is left.
After the wonderful night at the Makalu Base Camp we will moved to Numbuck. today also we have to make 6 hours of walk and extra more time to set up our camp for night.
The trial to Khongma is passes through exciting trial, the entire path is passes through lovely, abit cold and frosty in the somewhat chilly environment.
After a leisurely lunch, take a long nap before returning to civilisation at Tashi Gaun. Then, stroll easily to Seduwa.
Our trek to Makalu Base Camp is almost at its conclusion. In early morning as we leave Mure, we will head towards the starting point of our trekking adventure. Khandbari, a nearby town in that area, is where we will be going after having some food.
On the 17th day of Trek our team will explore the area of Khandbari and after having a delicious breakfast we will take the jeep for Tumlingtar, during the journey we will stop for lunch and grab some snack. as soon as we arrive Tumlingtar we will begin our journey to Kathmandu where we spend over night.
All the travelers are given a time to explore the cultural beauty of Kathmandu. the day is also taken as buffer day to keep your body relaxation check your physical status after the long trek, if you feel better you can go around the local market of Kathmandu valley.
We greet you a final farewell and drop you off at Tribhuvan International Airport.
